I'm not hearing back on my Change of Circumstances - what now?

Updated: Oct 16

In the face of current NDIS delays, many are reporting that it can take months or more to hear back.

Here's a step-by-step guide to hearing back about your change of circumstances.

Step 1. Understand the NDIS Participant Guarantee

While the NDIS has acknowledged that it is not currently meeting these timeframes, knowing them can help you advocate for yourself or others.

From the date the NDIA receives your change of circumstances application, they have a certain number of days to tell you whether or not they agree there has been a change of circumstances.

If they take longer than these times, there are ways you can help move things along.

Step 2. Writing a letter to the NDIA feedback email

I have included a template below to help.

Subject: Change of Circumstances Delay [Participant Name] [NDIS Number]

Email:

Dear NDIA Feedback Team,

I hope this email finds you well! My name is __________ and I am writing to you to express my concern that my change of circumstances application has yet to be addressed.

The application was lodged on [DATE], to request [brief summary of changes requested]. Under the NDIA's Participant Service Guarantee, I understand the agency has committed to a timeframe of ___ days to notify a participant whether or not a change of circumstances had been approved. As ____ days have passed since the application, I hope to hear back from you soon.

Please do not hesitate to let me know if you require any further documentation or have any questions or concerns.

Many thanks,

Step 3. Writing an email to your local federal member

Please note this template uses formal language based on the Australian parliament's guidance around writing to ministers.

Dear Minister [LASTNAME],

I hope you are doing well! My name is [NAME], and I am writing to you to ask for your help with an NDIS matter.

Quite some time ago, I applied for a change of circumstances with the NDIA.

The form was lodged on [DATE], receipt number [number]. Under the NDIA's Participant Service Guarantee, I understand the agency has committed to a timeframe of ___ days to notify a participant whether or not a change of circumstances had been approved. As over [DAYS] days have passed, I am reaching out to you for help. I am particularly concerned as I have [run out of/am about to run out of] funding in several categories, which will compromise my ability to receive essential support.

I am grateful for any help you can offer. Please do not hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Yours faithfully,

[Your name]

Step 4. Following up with the NDIA and your local federal minister as needed

Wishing you all the best for a speedy outcome!
